Woman, 50, gang-raped, slaughtered in Ogun

A 50-year-old Benniose woman was on Friday in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, gang-raped and slaughtered by the rapists.

As at the time of this report four suspects have been arrested and quizzed by the Ogun State Police Command in connection with the crime.

The rapists were said to have stormed the resident of the woman located at Oriyanrin area of the town, having gained access through the window.

Saturday Independent investigation revealed that the victim, a mother of five, known as Mama Friday, resides alone in the boys quarters on the main building, while his husband, a bricklayer works in Ifo town.

The gang having gained access into the apartment engaged the victim in a marathon sex, and after satisfying their sexual urge slaughtered her before fleeing the scene.

Ironically, while the attack lasted during the odd hours, neighbours of the victim were unaware until the following morning when her lifeless body was found on the bed, with bloodstain and pants at the edge of the bed.

When our correspondent visited the scene policemen were seen removing the corpse which was later taken to State Hospital Mortuary, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.

A neighbor, who identified herself as Mariam Idowu, told newsmen that the sad information got to her early in the morning of Friday.

She recalled it was her colleagues in pap selling trade who observed that she (the deceased) did not come out early as was her practice, only to discover her lifeless body having gone to check her whereabouts.

Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Muyiwa Adejobi, while confirming the incident, said that four persons have so far been arrested.

Adejobi who said that investigation has commenced added that the woman was slaughtered.
Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof Bem Angwe, has raised an alarm over the increase in the cases of rape especially the defilement of minors across the country and called on the police to be more vigilant in their investigation to bring the culprits to book.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday when he received the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, John Kennedy Opara, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office, Angwe stated that there is the need for religious organisations and the Christian Pilgrims Commission to cooperate with the NHRC in its quest to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.

According to him, “I wish to condemn in very strong terms the increasing cases of rape in the country especially the defilement of minors; just last week it was reported that a girl of eight years was allegedly raped to death by an unknown persons in Ikot Ekang, Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa-Ibom State. I wish to call on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to commence an immediate investigation into the case in question and other related matters to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.”

WÍhile calling on the NHRC Akwa-Ibom State office to also commence immediate investigation into the matter the Executive Secretary called on parents and guardians to cooperate with the Commission in its quest to bring the culprits to book as it has been observed that over time parents and guardians of rape victims always refuse to cooperate with security and law enforcement agents in the prosecution of culprits.

On why he is at the NHRC, Opara said “We are here to encourage Prof. Angwe in the job they are doing in terms of being the voice of the voiceless, as a faith based agency we are using pilgrimage as a tool for transformation. Specifically, the latest victim of rape in Akwa-Ibom State who was sent on an errand by her grandfather, Enobong Wilson, at about 6.30pm on Tuesday only for her to be raped and her corpse was discovered near an uncompleted building in their neighborhood.”

In a desperate desire to make quick money and have fun, some underage girls in Kaduna have taken to commercial sex work.

Saturday Independent discovered that the young girls mostly between the ages of 13 and 16 hang around popular nightclubs to attract customers.

Some of them that don’t enter the club to dance strategically pose along the club roads any time from 8pm on a daily basis flaunting their breast region and legs.

A tour round some of the clubs at Barnawa Low Cost and Narayi High-Cost revealed that the teenage prostitutes that usually dress in biknis are prepared to take any amount.

From information gathered, the vulnerable looking teenagers don’t mind anything given to them after servicing their customers.

It was also gathered that most of them that have embraced commercial sex work as a means of livelihood were either influenced by the presence of several dance clubs established within their residential areas or friends.

In a chat with one of them at Rose Base Dance Club, Mira, as she gave her name, narrated how she was introduced into prostitution by a senior neighbour and “School Mother”. She explained that it was initially rough for her, but that after three weeks in the business, she now have fun and make some money to survive.

When asked how much she charges, she said, “anything from N500”.
According to her, her parents are not aware that she is into the business of prostitution but that they query her regularly on her outings.

However, at Viviana Garden, Narayi High Cost, it was an open show for all where large numbers of teenage prostitutes enter freely to dance and search for prospective customer. Another teenage prostitute, who said her name as Lilly, said she left Abuja last year to stay with a friend in search of work in Kaduna but after a week she was introduced into commercial sex work.
“She encourage me to leave my sister in Abuja to come and work in Kaduna but only for my friend to introduce me into this Ashawo business,” Lilly stated.

On whether she enjoys it or not, the 15-year-old Igbo girl said, “It”s not bad, I have been able to buy some clothes, shoes and good creams, so it’s not so bad for now”.

Speaking on how much she charge, she said, “it depends on whether it is short time or overnight.”
For “a short time or sharp-sharp runs,” she hinted that it is N500 and overnight between N1000 to N2000
