Nigeria’s military said on Saturday that it has recorded a major success in its onslaught against the dreaded Islamist sect, Boko Haram as troops of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have captured a major armoury of terrorists during a raid in the Lake Chad area of Borno State.
The military also said many members of the insurgent group were killed and substantial amount of money including foreign currencies of different denominations recovered in a statement by Major General Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information.
He added that a large cache of arms and ammunitions recovered from the terrorists are still being evacuated from their camp.
“Troops have captured a massive armoury with arms and ammunition dump of the terrorists sited in one of the camps that fell yesterday night in the ongoing counter terrorists operations.
“The large quantities of weapons recovered in the raid are still being evacuated from the scene of the night raid where several terrorists died.
“Similar operations took place in coordination with the troops of Multi-National Joint Task Force in the raids in other camps located in the outskirts of Duguri, Polkime, Malafatori and other locations around the fringes of Lake Chad.
“Substantial money in different currencies and denominations were also recovered from the camps.
“A total of seven terrorists were captured in the operation during which altogether a soldier died while five were wounded”.
The Defence spokesperson also said troops conducting cordon and search for remnants of the terrorists who attacked a military barrack in Maiduguri on Friday had an encounter with some of the surviving terrorists in the general area of Kayamla and Alu Dam in the outskirts of Maiduguri this morning.
“More of the terrorists have been killed and arrested in the ongoing encounters,” the defence spokesperson said.
According to him, those captured in the encounter are providing useful information towards the discovery of other hide outs of the daring terrorists.
“It has been revealed that the terrorists are now desperate to either free or kill the ones being detained, with a view to avenging or preventing further revelations about their operations and hide outs as this has been frustrating their plans lately.
General Olukolade added that the bodies of fleeing terrorists have been discovered along the routes of their escape while troops’ morale and fighting spirit have been further boosted by the outcome of the operations so far.
“Meanwhile, cordon and search as well as patrols and pursuit by air and land is continuing in the entire mission area of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States,” he concluded.

Justice And The Killer Cop

NOT surprisingly, and for good reasons too, security agencies, in particular the Nigeria Police, have been placed on the spot by local and international human rights communities for their highhandedness in dealing with suspects in custody or at points of arrest. Quite a number of extra-judicial killings and tortures in these circumstances have been highlighted by the local media too.    Against this background, the judgment of the Bayelsa State High Court, Nembe Division, sitting in Yenagoa, delivered by Justice Lucky Boufili sending killer policeman, Matthew Egheghe, to the gallows is most welcome. It is a bold statement that the law frowns at cruelty by uniformed officers of the state and that an appropriate premium is placed on life by the Nigerian state.   That judgment would not bring back the dead, but it should to some extent console their grieving families that justice was served to the guilty. It would equally serve as a deterrent to trigger-h...
