Obasanjo Is Nigeria's Worst Leader - Kalu

The immediate past governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu, has said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is the worst leader Nigeria has had since its independence in 1960.

Kalu spoke at an annual lecture organised by the Department of Economics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka on Tuesday.

PUNCH reports Dr. Orji Kalu saying “Obasanjo is the worst President Nigeria has ever produced since our independence. Instead of generating employment opportunities, he was busy closing down peoples businesses.

“He closed down Hallmark Bank and Slok Air that would have provided so many employment opportunities for our youth.”

The former Abia State governor said the closure of Hallmark Bank where he (Kalu) had significant stake and Slok Air, were efforts deployed by Obasanjo to deal with him.

He said that the former President’s action on Hallmark Bank and Slok Air slowed down the employment opportunities he (Kalu) would have created for Nigerians.

Kalu, however, enjoined the federal and state governments to initiate entrepreneurship programmes that would help achieve economic development.

The former governor said that to achieve meaningful development, governments at all levels must empower the youths.

He observed that economic development was a major criterion for national development.

“If there is no economic stability in the world, there will be no political stability,” Kalu said.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Barth Okolo, said that the inaugural lecture was for soul-searching, as its theme touched on the well-being of every one present at the occasion.

Justice And The Killer Cop

NOT surprisingly, and for good reasons too, security agencies, in particular the Nigeria Police, have been placed on the spot by local and international human rights communities for their highhandedness in dealing with suspects in custody or at points of arrest. Quite a number of extra-judicial killings and tortures in these circumstances have been highlighted by the local media too.    Against this background, the judgment of the Bayelsa State High Court, Nembe Division, sitting in Yenagoa, delivered by Justice Lucky Boufili sending killer policeman, Matthew Egheghe, to the gallows is most welcome. It is a bold statement that the law frowns at cruelty by uniformed officers of the state and that an appropriate premium is placed on life by the Nigerian state.   That judgment would not bring back the dead, but it should to some extent console their grieving families that justice was served to the guilty. It would equally serve as a deterrent to trigger-h...
