2 people were killed and another injured Wednesday by the collapse of a crane on the site of a Sao Paulo stadium that will host the opening game of next year’s World Cup, authorities said.

“The initial toll of three has been revised downward to two and one injured person was rushed to hospital,” a police spokesman told AFP.

Police said a crane fell on workers rushing to complete the Arena Corinthians stadium, where the opening World Cup match is to be held next June.

The world football’s governing body FIFA set a December 31 deadline for finishing the work.
The crane collapsed as it was lifting a 500-ton lattice structure to the top of the stands, bringing down three metal structures, Globo television reported.

The company overseeing the construction work immediately halted work and said it would investigate.

The stadium is one of 12 World Cup venues and Brazil has been struggling to overhaul sagging infrastructure in time for the games.

The reported 11 billion dollar cost of staging the event has aroused public protests.

Justice And The Killer Cop

NOT surprisingly, and for good reasons too, security agencies, in particular the Nigeria Police, have been placed on the spot by local and international human rights communities for their highhandedness in dealing with suspects in custody or at points of arrest. It is a bold statement that the law frowns at cruelty by uniformed officers of the state and that an appropriate premium is placed on life by the Nigerian state.   That judgment would not bring back the dead, but it should to some extent console their grieving families that justice was served to the guilty. It would equally serve as a deterrent to trigger-h...
