Born Again Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II, has bowed to the wishes of his people, the Itsekiri Nation who protested at the decision of their leader who renounced the old and archaic tradition of the Itsekiri land for Christianity.
The Itsekiri people represented by thousands of youths, men, women and spiced by masquerades marched peacefully through the streets to the palace to register their displeasure as they maintained tradition and religion could not mix and insisted that he could not renounce his “Ogiame” traditional title which means “King of all Water gods and goddesses” because of his Christian faith.
The “Ogiame” traditional title was the title the Olu chose to be known by when crowned Olu of Warri in the 80s.
But the voice of the Itsekiri Nation prevailed after the palace chiefs met with the king who finally agreed to retain the Ogiame title thereby denouncing his new Christian faith. See photo of the protesters at the Olu of Warri's Palace after the cut......
